Operation c game boy review

It is up to the elite protagonists to stop it. Your mission starts off at a city harbor before making your way to an island where the source of the invasion is located. In total, there are 5 areas for you to take on. You start off with a machine gun, but there are a number of item pickups that will allow you to upgrade your weapon.

There is the flare shot which fires explosive balls of energy. On contact, they spread four additional balls in four different directions for additional damage.

Another weapon is the spread shot. This allows players to fire in a spreading pattern. While you can get about 3 shots, you can stack an additional spread and increase the spread to four bullets per shot. Probably the most effective weapon upgrade in the game, however, is the heat seeking shots.

They behave like an simple spread shot, but whenever an enemy appears, the shot will simply go into the enemies direction. This can allow some very complex shots to take place. This includes being able to stand safely off to the side while your shots hit various boss and mini-boss weak points.

You start off with two free lives. Like other Contra titles, you are on a one hit kill basis. So, coming into contact with an enemy, harmful object, or getting hit with an enemy shot will kill you off. For every 25, points you earn, you gain an extra life. Defeat the boss and you advance to the next level. Defeat the mini-boss to continue on. This style of gameplay — especially area 2 — closely resembles what you find in the game Ikari Warriors.

If you're lucky, you might lose only a single life during such segments. Operation C manages to redeem itself with a crushing final act, however. You finally feel like you're playing a Contra title, with the correct difficulty setting, and it only took four stages to get there.

Imagine the third level, but excise the falling rocks and toss in spider-like aliens reminiscent of the facehuggers from Ridley Scott's and James Cameron's films. There are even a couple of elevator sections where you have to blast marching soldiers and the aforementioned extraterrestrials, all while ducking beneath bolts of electricity.

The gauntlet culminates in a super-tough final boss fight that breaks from Contra tradition. As a result, he's ironically one of the more forgettable series antagonists, but the altercation is still worthy and engaging. I wish I could urge you to track down a copy of Operation C. It's a middling installment to a once magnificent franchise, but it's not without entertaining moments. The game just doesn't compare favorably to most of the rest of the series. It features no standout scenes, no memorable clashes, and it takes too long to finally become the run 'n gun experience it should have been from the start.

You won't likely regret playing through Operation C , but you aren't especially likely to remember much about the experience, either. Earth Atlantis PC Watered down. Husk PC Quiet Knoll. Fading Visage PC 'Fading' because there isn't much substance to begin with Masters posted February 15, This is pretty much an ideal review for this game, well done.

I'm on a Contra kick right now, thanks in part to the Captain, so I hunted Operation C down on HG to see if it had a review, and happily found this one. Incidentally, the way you described the top-down levels 2 and 4, suggested to me that you haven't played Super C.

Is that true? That game eschewed Contra's behind-the-back levels for vertical shooting fare that Operation C obviously decided to continue with. It's an unpopular opinion, I'm sure, but I actually prefer the top-down to the behind-the-back, even though Contra is a better game last time I checked than Super C. Playcontrol: As with many early action-based Game Boy titles, this game can feel just a tad sluggish at times.

I never played Operation C on the original Game Boy hardware. So the Contra Anniversary Collection is my first experience with the game. Like other titles in this anthology, I suspect that this game, feels a bit more natural on the original hardware. With this in mind, it is certainly worth the money. Overall score : 65 — All things considered, Operation C is a pretty decent game. It succeeds in what it sets out to accomplish — which is to provide the Contra experience for users of the Game Boy system.
