Regardless of what anyone might say about Sony's track record of delivering timely firmware upgrades, the company can hardly be faulted for its hardware choices. Sony has a knack for designing phones that look as incredible as they feel. The Sony Xperia TL is no exception to that trait. In fact, it's Exhibit A for anyone who wants to make a case for Sony being home to one the best team of designers in the phone industry.
It makes sense that this would be the "Bond phone" because the Xperia TL embodies several of the characteristics that have come to define the Bond character: slender, nimble, strong, and handsome. The Sony Xperia TL measures 9. The back of the device has rounded edges that stop suddenly and meet the front edges of the phone that slant inward. The frame is The phone is pleasing to touch because the back is treated with an aluminum finishing that gives the phone an interesting texture that is neither smooth nor rough.
The main portion of the phone is anodized aluminum, which better resists scratches and makes the phone feel cool and at ease in the hand. Above the anodized aluminum, the Xperia TL is anchored by matte material, as well as a distinctive 13 megapixel camera and LED flash towards the top of the device. Below the flash is a circle outline that acts as a guide to where the phone should be placed when using its built-in NFC chip.
Though Sony chose to use a Frankenstein-like mishmash of materials, the components are complementary rather than clashing. Button placement unfortunately makes less sense. The Xperia TL inexplicably has the power and volume buttons toward the lower portion of the phone, so the buttons are covered by the user's palm when held in normal position. Should someone who is right-handed feel the need to raise or lower the volume, that person would have to tilt the phone back and awkwardly move towards the volume up or down buttons.
Sony could have just as easily placed those ports on the bottom in favor of more natural positions for the power and volume buttons. The Xperia TL features a 4. The x resolution has ppi, so text renders much smoother than seen on lesser displays. The Bravia Engine is designed to offer real-time adjustments to color saturation and brightness settings to deliver a more vivid display. For the most part, that works well when browsing in the gallery or viewing locally-stored HD videos.
Bravia has no effect in standard browsing, which is unfortunate because the screen appears too bright, almost as if a layer of white with low opacity is placed over the screen. But if the imminent arrival of its galactic stablemates is any indication, expect to see it in "the coming weeks.
This 4G LTE smartphone takes connected entertainment to the next level with new Sony media applications. Photo enthusiasts will delight in the impressive images taken with Xperia TL's megapixel primary camera that brings even the smallest of details to life. This high resolution camera captures quality images swiftly with its quick launch feature, going from standby mode sleep to first shot in just 1.
Plus, both the rear and front-facing cameras deliver HD recording capabilities for vivid video capture on the go. Xperia TL gives you the ultimate in HD with a superb 4. The viewing experience on Xperia TL is accentuated by a stylish, slim form factor that emphasizes the display. Now, you can conveniently and instantaneously enjoy your music and photos across an array of NFC enabled devices by simply touching one to another to establish a wireless connection without a cumbersome pairing process.
Using near field communication technology, SmartTags let you store device preferences for a variety of locations and situations — like opening and controlling volume on the music player if you head out for a run, turning on GPS and Bluetooth in the car or turning on your alarm and silencing your ringer at night.
Xperia TL includes three preloaded Sony media applications, Walkman, Movies, and Album, introducing a consistent user interface across Sony devices. Album will be especially appealing to photo takers with features such as:. Geo-mapping in satellite and traditional map views More than 25 editing options Improved layout of photo and video folders, both in device and online. With other carriers, when you travel outside of their LTE coverage area, you may be on a much slower 3G network.
Upgradable to Android version 4. Both phones are constructed from darkly hued metal and glass as well, and feature 4. Above the screen sits a 1. Similar to what you'll find on HTC handsets, the lens protrudes from the surface slightly, which may annoy those who prefer it to be flush. I do like how Sony adds a bit of design flair here with the back surface chiseled from anodized aluminum to resist scratches and dings. The lock screen is very basic, just a long virtual slider you drag from left to right along the bottom edge.
A digital clock displays the current time and date in a thin, sophisticated font, but there are no quick launch icons to jump straight to important phone functions here. Swiping right though will push the clock to the side in favor of music playback controls. There are five home screens at your disposal, and you can fill them with widgets, application shortcuts, and wallpapers as you see fit.
By default the Xperia uses the "Skyfall" theme that has the iconic James Bond gun-barrel eye view as the main backdrop; sound effects are loaded, too, for e-mail alerts and ringtones. Features and apps Thanks to its Android software, the Xperia TL comes equipped with all the skills that qualify it as a true Google device. It connects to all the standard Google apps and services, such as Gmail, Maps, and Navigation. There are also shortcuts to enter the Google Play store for books, music, and movies.
